The Mercantile Rugby Football Association (MRFA) consists of a team of dedicated volunteers with a passion for developing and promoting rugby in the corporate sector. The objective of the association has been to identify and nurture young rugby talent so that they obtain gainful employment in the corporate sector.
The mercantile rugby tournament has been a catalyst in this aspect, and players who have been successful in displaying their talents and skills during past tournaments have secured employment in leading corporates in the country. It is also gratifying to note that most players who have represented the country have been identified and nurtured while participating in MRFA tournaments.
The Mercantile Rugby Sevens is the much-awaited annual event in the rugby calendar, continuously conducted for more than fifty years. The tournament spans two and a half days with an average of around 36 teams from the corporate sector. To keep competitive rugby throughout, and to encourage new companies, it is run in four segments — Cup, Plate, Bowl and Shield — for men, with a tag rugby tournament for ladies.
The sevens is played under floodlights in a festival atmosphere, with entertainment and food stalls for spectators and supporters.
